The American Psychological Association (APA) is looking for a Program Director. The Program Director oversees and manages APF’s scholarship, grant, prize and award programs and is responsible for the success of APF’s more than 60 grant programs, which award approximately $1,000,000 each year. The Program Director ensures that the process flows smoothly, coordinating among staff, trustees, review committees, applicants, nominators, and nominees for the various grants, awards, scholarships, and prizes.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Ph.D. in Psychology required
  • 10 years of experience with psychological research to understand and help screen grant applications.
  • Experience with evaluating grants or research is preferred
  • Nonprofit/foundation experience a plus
  • Strong writing/editing skills

COMPUTER SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Advanced MS Office
  • Advanced grants management software (GLM preferable)
  • Advanced in PsycInfo and ability to use statistics to analyze data

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Manage APF’s more than 60 different funding programs to achieve maximum impact.
  • Create and maintain applications on APF’s online application portal and grants management database.
  • As appropriate, work with CEO and development staff to devise new grant and scholarship opportunities, assuring that these conform to APF mission and policies and achieve new goals.
  • Design and institute application and review structures for new grant programs in collaboration with the CEO and development staff.
  • Communicate with applicants, volunteers, grantees, trustees, and donors on the APF grant application and review requirements.
  • Ensure APF application requirements conform to best practices.
  • Responsible for and tracking the grantmaking budget to ensure APF stays within budget.
  1. Responsible for the grant review process.
  • Conduct preliminary review of all applications
  • Serve as staff liaison for the more than 60 APF review committees
  • Recruit experts to serve on review committees in consultation with the Interim Chief Operating Officer and/or the CEO.
  • Set and coordinate deadlines for various awards, scholarships, and grants.
  • Develop procedures and systems to ensure the grant processes flows smoothly and ensure committees follow them
  • Develop ballots and other materials for APF review committees.
  • Analyze results of grant review committees’ rankings.
  1. Serve as staff liaison to the APF Board of Trustee Grant and Evaluation Committee.
  • Develop and implement evaluation strategies and processes for all APF programs.
  • Keep abreast of best practices in philanthropic evaluation and grants administration.
    • Write agendas and other materials for the committee in consultation with the Interim Chief Operating Officer and/or the CEO and the Grants and Evaluation Committee Chair.
    • Work closely with Grant and Evaluation Committee Chair and committee members, including suggesting potential committee members.
  • Manage APF lectures, symposia and other events at the APA Convention.
    • Serve as the APF staff liaison for the APF/APA Awards.
    • Write scripts for APF speakers.
    • Assist in identifying APF grantees on the convention program.

 Other Duties as Assigned including

  • Write agenda items and take minutes for Board of Trustee meetings and grant review committees.
  • Assist in developing articles on APF grants for communications purposes.
  • Assists with development activities.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Hires, trains, coaches, manages and evaluates performance of 1 or more direct reports. Approves direct reports’ timesheets and PTO in HR Information System.
