NEW PROJECT:
During the past year Shane Jimerson, Tom Oakland and Peter Farrell have been
working with colleagues around the world to pilot a process to gather
information about school psychology in different countries. Based on the success
of these efforts, SAGE Publications has asked them to develop The Handbook
of International School Psychology. This Handbook will provide
information regarding the context, origins, history, current status,
infrastructure, preparation, roles, functions, responsibilities, current issues,
and seminal references in school psychology from various countries.

THE
UNITED NATIONS has granted special consultative status to ISPA
At its session in July 2004 the Economic and Social
Council of the UN has decided to grant special consultative status to ISPA. The
new status means that ISPA may designate official representatives to the United
Nations Headquarters in New York and to the offices in Geneva and Vienna.
Needless to say, a regular presence of ISPA representatives at relevant meetings
will allow us to implement effectively and fruitfully the provisions for this
consultative relationship.
The Executive Committee is very pleased that the
Council has decided to honor ISPA with its confidence. As ISPA is requested to
submit quadrennial reports, it is important for us to maintain detailed records
of our activities.
How ISPA can meet the many challenges in relation to
the new status granted of UN shall be an important item for e-mail discussions
in the coming months between the members of the Executive Committee and other
ISPA-members. At the EC meeting in February 2005 we will consider the
possibilities and agree a plan of action.
Jean-Claude Guillemard
and Stuart Hart are to be thanked for their
faithful and long standing work as ISPA representatives at UN-meetings in Geneva
and Paris. Indeed their competent and dynamic efforts during the years has been
important in establishing the new status ISPA has been granted. Jean-Claude
Guillemard has for several years been the ISPA-UNESCO liaison officer and
serves as the secretary of the reflection Group of UNESCO-NGOs on Education For
All. Stuart Hart’s involvement on Children’s Rights has been an
important ongoing activity of the Association and his work has been the focus of
several meetings at ISPA colloquia.
